Maui County Council
LANAI
Age: 43
Occupation: Invasive Species Technician for Pulama Lana’i
Years lived in area: 12
Education:
•Bachelor of Arts in English from Kent State University, Kent,Ohio.
•Graduate work at the School for International Training in
•Brattleboro Vermont
Experience:
I was a Maui County Commissioner for the Americans with Disabilities Act for the past 2 years. During that time I focused on the County’s low number of employing people with Disabilities. We found that a key component to hiring people with disabilities is to have the Work place aptly trained and prepared before they were hired. We worked on creating a Best Practices guide for the County’s Human Resources Department. I also successfully advocated for bringing over a Van with a Wheelchair lift (Lana’i did not have one before) from the Department of Transportation.
During my time in Japan I was elected to represent Southern Japan (Block 10) of the Association of Japan Language and Teaching Program. (AJET). My main focus was Cross-Cultural Communication in which my goal was to foster an environment that helped solve much of our misunderstandings in the workplace.
I am now the Invasive Species Technician for the Island of Lana’i.
I believe my work experience will be an asset for the County Council as we struggle to deal with Invasive Species on a daily basis.
Campaign Statement:
I am Gabe Johnson and I am running for the Maui County Council, Lana’i Seat.
- Push for the County to finally listen to the people who do notwish to be poisoned by the constant spraying of toxic chemicals in GMO fields around the islands.
- Advocate and reach concrete solutions for our Affordable Housing throughout the County. I fully support Habitat for Humanity and other Organizations who are willing to do the work through Land Trusts.
- I have witnessed firsthand what the Injection Wells are doing to our Coral Reefs, fish, and water quality. Recently the County has been sued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency because it is proven that sewer water from the Injection Wells are leaking into the reefs. This is unacceptable and I will push for the recycling of the water instead of injecting it into our aquifer.
- I believe in the Public Trust Doctrine. I believe that the public entrusts the government to manage Natural Resources fairly. The County has instead focused on the needs of corporations instead of the people. This will change if I am elected.
