KAMA, Natalie “Tasha”

About:

Tasha is native Hawaiian with a blood quantum that qualifies her to be a beneficiary of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920, which issues land awards. She applied for a lease and since that time has been active in Hawaiian homestead issues. When the Office of Hawaiian Affairs came into existence she became engaged in Hawaiian affairs. She founded the Waiohuli/Keokea Hawaiian Homestead Association in 1988 to push the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to put the infrastructure in those areas so lessees could build their homes onto their lands.

She was appointed by Governor Waihee to sit on the 20 member Hawaiian Sovereignty Advisory Commission which became the Hawaiian Sovereignty Elections Council which asked the question, “Shall the Hawaiian People elect delegates to propose a Native Hawaiian government?” The process ended when the state of Hawaii failed to fund the continuation of the work of the council amidst much opposition by Hawaiians and non Hawaiians.

Tasha’s activism for social justice continues with her work through Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE) in addressing affordable housing and immigration issues.

She sees her role on the Maui County Council as an opportunity to improve the quality of life for all of Maui County, always willing to serve with aloha.

Where she stands on the issues:

  • Housing: Viable solutions on the critical affordable housing needs and the homeless.
  • Kupuna: Programs to address the needs for our seniors so they may enjoy the quality of life they deserve.
  • Employment: The expansion of diversity and opportunities for employment and living wages that can sustain living needs.
  • Education: Our children and adults of all ages must be prepared for a changing world. Everyone must have access to education and vocational training that is relevant to today’s workplace.
  • Veterans: As a pastor and a parent I have seen the results of people coming back from war. I am committed to doing my best for our veterans, now and in the future.
  • Honest and ethical government we deserve: As your representative I will fight to ensure that government is transparent and that Maui’s people come first.
  • Fairness by institutions: End “redlining” by banks which is a practice of denying loans based on ethicity or location.
  • Stream flow: Water is a critical issue and providing clean water to all is of utmost importance. I am in favor of restoring stream flows and am supportive of giving kuleana farmers their water rights, and allowing the natural flow restore the streams and reefs
  • Clean energy and diversified agriculture: The development of clean, renewable energy, as well as diversified crops, helps to ensure Hawaii’s self-sufficiency and economic strength.
  • Our ecology is our economy: Our policies must be sustainable; they must not harm our environment and they must benefit our people and our quality of life.
